How to look up the permits on a Cedar Rapids address
- Try the Permit Viewer or the Customer Self Service portal with your address or permit number.
- If you know roughly when the work was done, open Permit Reports and download that month's "Permits Issued by Permit Type" file.
- Use your spreadsheet's find (Ctrl+F) for the street name, then check the house number. Each kind of work is its own row: an HVAC change-out and a panel upgrade on the same house are two permits.
- Note the permit number and valuation.
- For the current status, look the permit number up in the online tools or ask Building Services. The report's status is only the status on the day the report was run.
What the statuses mean
The monthly reports carry a status, but it is frozen at the day each report was run and never updated. Across the reports the values are Issued, Closed, Expired and Pending Review. A permit that reads Issued in a 2024 report may well be Closed today, so don't read an old Issued as a problem. For the same reason our pages show no finished share and no time to final.
When the record is not online
For older or fuller records, such as plans and inspection results, ask Building Services. Iowa's public records law is Iowa Code chapter 22. We did not find a City page describing a records-request process, so check the City's site or ask Building Services how to send one.
What our Cedar Rapids pages add
The Cedar Rapids page counts permits issued October 2024 to September 2026 by kind of work:
| Kind of work | Permits (Oct 2024–Sep 2026) | Last 12 months (Oct 2025–Sep 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| HVAC | 3,162 | 1,622 |
| Plumbing | 2,562 | 1,254 |
| Electrical | 2,502 | 1,246 |
| Demolition | 135 | 54 |
| Other, including all building permits | 6,829 | 3,235 |
72% of the 15,190 permits were for homes. In mid-2025 the City moved to a new permit system whose reports describe a building permit only as residential or commercial, so we count every building permit under Other to keep the two years comparable. The permit statistics page has the file by year and month, browse permits lists the rows without street addresses, and the ZIP code pages split the counts by ZIP. To check a contractor's Iowa registration, see How to check a contractor's license in Iowa.
What this does not tell you
The reports name no contractor, so there are no contractor lists or rankings for Cedar Rapids. Their valuation sets the fee and is not a final cost; trade permits often carry none. The file covers the City of Cedar Rapids only: Marion, Hiawatha, Robins and unincorporated Linn County issue their own permits.
How we know this
The portal description is quoted from the City of Cedar Rapids Building Services Customer Self Service page, read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City's monthly Permits Issued by Permit Type reports, read 19 October 2026: permits issued October 2024 to September 2026, with zoning, oversize-load, erosion-control and floodplain permits left out.
Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Cedar Rapids?
Try the City's Permit Viewer, linked from the Building Services pages, or the Customer Self Service portal. For a list by month, the Permit Reports page has an Excel report of permits issued for every month since January 2013, with each permit's address.
- Can I look up Cedar Rapids permits by contractor?
Not in the published reports, which name no contractor. Ask the contractor for permit numbers from past jobs and look those up instead.
- What do the statuses in the Cedar Rapids permit reports mean?
Each monthly report shows a permit's status (Issued, Closed, Expired, Pending Review) on the day the report was run, and the report is never updated. A permit marked Issued in an old report may since have closed.
- How many permits does Cedar Rapids issue?
About 7,595 a year: 15,190 permits from October 2024 to September 2026, led by HVAC (3,162), plumbing (2,562) and electrical (2,502).
