DallasNow's help line is (214) 948-4480, Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (read 24 October 2026). The portal covers the City of Dallas only: Irving, Garland, Mesquite, Richardson, Plano and unincorporated Dallas County run their own permit offices.
How to look up the permits on a Dallas address
- Open the DallasNow building search. No account is needed to search.
- Set the search type to Search by Address and enter the street number and name, or use the permit number from your paperwork.
- Open each record on the address. Plumbing, electrical and mechanical work each carry their own permit, so a remodel usually shows several.
- Read the status, then the inspections list, to see whether the final inspection passed.
- To check who pulled a permit, switch to Search by Licensed Professional Information and look up the contractor's license number.
What the statuses mean
The City's open permit file uses these statuses. This is how our pages count them:
| Status in the City file | What it means | How we count it |
|---|---|---|
| Complete | Work finished and the permit closed | Finished |
| Issued | Permit active, work under way or not yet finaled | Open |
| Expired | Lapsed before a final | Expired |
| Cancelled, Revoked | Never went ahead or withdrawn by the City | Left out |
Of the permits issued November 2022 to October 2023, 72.8% were Complete, 26.8% were still open and 0.4% had expired, by the statuses the City recorded as of December 2024. The open file has no final inspection date, so we cannot say how long Dallas permits take.
When the record is not online
The City Secretary's Open Records page says requests under the Texas Public Information Act must be written, with "enough description and detail about the information requested" and your name, address and telephone number. You can send it to the director of the department most likely to hold the record, or to the Open Records Request Center, which routes it. The page notes the Act requires copies of existing records but not new records, and that the City does not hold Dallas County's records (read 24 October 2026).
What our Dallas pages add
DallasNow answers "what was permitted at this address". Our Dallas page answers "what gets permitted in Dallas, and where", from the City's permits issued November 2022 to October 2024:
| Kind of work | Permits (Nov 2022–Oct 2024) | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Plumbing | 19,009 | 24% |
| Electrical | 11,154 | 14% |
| HVAC | 8,582 | 11% |
| Roofing | 4,727 | 6% |
| Remodels and repairs | 4,593 | 6% |
| New homes | 4,291 | 6% |

| Fences and walls | 2,509 | 3% |
| Additions | 2,116 | 3% |
| Pools and spas | 1,425 | 2% |
71% of the 77,908 permits issued November 2022 to October 2024 were on homes. The permit statistics page breaks them down by year, month and season, permits by ZIP code shows where the work is (75229 led with 4,100 permits in the same window), and browse permits lists the rows without owner names or street addresses. To check a contractor's state license, use How to check a contractor's license in Texas.
What this does not tell you
The City's open permit file stops in November 2024, so our Dallas pages end with October 2024; newer permits are only in DallasNow. The file names no contractor, so we show counts, not firm rankings, and the value on a permit is the declared job value, not the final cost.
How we know this
Portal details were read on the DallasNow home and building search pages, and the records process on the City Secretary's Open Records page, on 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City of Dallas GIS New Permits 1971-2024 layer, read 18 October 2026: building and trade permits issued November 2022 to October 2024, City of Dallas only.
Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 31, 2024. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Dallas?
Open DallasNow (aca-prod.accela.com/DALLASTX), go to the building search and search by address. The search page opened without an account on 24 October 2026. Open each record on the address and check its status and inspections.
- Can I look up Dallas permits by contractor?
Yes. DallasNow's building search has a Search by Licensed Professional Information option, with license types such as A/C Contractor and Electrical Contractor, and a separate Search for a Licensee. The City's open permit file names no contractor, so our Dallas pages show counts, not firm lists.

No. Suburbs such as Irving, Garland, Mesquite, Richardson and Plano, and unincorporated Dallas County, run their own permit offices. DallasNow covers the City of Dallas.
- How many Dallas permits get finished?
Of the permits the City issued November 2022 to October 2023, 72.8% were marked Complete, 26.8% were still open and 0.4% had expired, by the City's statuses as of December 2024.
