How to check a contractor's license in Kansas

Kansas has one statewide contractor check: roofers must register with the Attorney General, and the Roofing Registration Directory shows whether a roofer is "In Good Standing". We found no other statewide license for builders or remodelers; contractors are licensed by the city or county, which in Wichita means the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD). That matters in Wichita, where 18,740 roofing permits were issued from October 2024 through September 2026, a third of all its permits.

What the roofer directory shows

Each record has the business name, status, registration number, contact name, city and state. The statuses, in the Attorney General's words:

Status Meaning
In Good Standing Registered and may lawfully provide roofing services
Exempt A general contractor who filed an affidavit of exempt status; may roof only in certain circumstances
Not In Good Standing Not currently authorized because of a compliance failure (insurance, workers' compensation, tax); will be revoked if not fixed promptly
Revoked May not act as a roofing contractor in Kansas
Enjoined Barred by a Kansas court from roofing in the state
Inactive Let the registration lapse

The Attorney General also publishes Roofer Enforcement Actions. For directory questions, call (785) 368-6644.

How to look a contractor up, step by step

  1. Roofer: search the directory and accept only "In Good Standing". Then check the enforcement actions list for the business and the contact name.
  2. Wichita or Sedgwick County, any trade: open the MABCD Online LookUp and use "Lookup Contractor License". MABCD's Form 62 asks a roofer for the "KS Roofer Registration Number" and a contractor license number, so a hired Wichita roofer should have both. An electrician's license number goes on Form 2.
  3. Overland Park: the city's directory lists which permits it requires but links no public license search; call City Hall.
  4. Look at the address's permits. MABCD's "Do I Need a Permit?" page calls a contractor who asks you to get the permit yourself "a red flag".

Red flags on a Kansas job

  • A roofer whose status is anything but "In Good Standing", or who is not in the directory.
  • A roofer knocking on doors after a storm; the Attorney General issues consumer alerts that storm damage "could attract unregistered contractors".
  • A Wichita contractor with no MABCD license number, or one who asks you to pull the permit as owner.
  • A firm on the Attorney General's enforcement list.

How we know this

Roofing registration statuses and fields are quoted from the Kansas Attorney General's Roofing Registration Directory and consumer FAQ, read 25 October 2026. MABCD's license lookup, Form 62, Form 2 and permit warnings are from Sedgwick County's pages, and Overland Park's from its Permits, Licenses and Inspections Directory, read 24 October 2026. Counts come from each city's public permit file, read 19 October 2026; we have not matched Kansas contractor names to license or registration records.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • Does Kansas have a state contractor license?

Not a general one. The statewide check we could verify is roofing contractor registration with the Attorney General under the Kansas Roofing Registration Act. Builders and trades are licensed locally; in Wichita and Sedgwick County that is the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD).

  • How do I check a roofer in Kansas?

Search the Attorney General's Roofing Registration Directory by business name, registration number or contact name, and look for the status "In Good Standing". Other statuses include Exempt, Not In Good Standing, Revoked, Enjoined and Inactive.

  • What does "Not In Good Standing" mean for a Kansas roofer?

The roofer is not currently authorized because of a compliance failure, such as insurance, workers' compensation or tax issues, and the Attorney General says the registration will be revoked if it is not corrected promptly.

  • How do I check a Wichita contractor's license?

Use "Lookup Contractor License" in the MABCD Online LookUp, or call MABCD at 316-660-1840 to check the firm's license and insurance. A Wichita roofer needs both a Kansas roofer registration number and an MABCD contractor license on Form 62.
