MABCD is the joint City of Wichita and Sedgwick County building office; the same rules apply in unincorporated Sedgwick County, but our numbers count the City of Wichita only.
The rule
MABCD's permits page (read 24 October 2026) lists the Mechanical permit, Form 1, with fees in Table K. Its Do I Need a Permit? page says "You must get a permit" and lets only finish work such as paint, carpet, cabinets and countertops go without one. Table K adds that mechanical work done under a building permit for a one- or two-family home's new construction, repair, remodel or addition is covered by that building permit, but "A separate heating and air-conditioning permit is required" if the work starts more than 180 days after the building permit was issued.
What it costs
Selected residential lines from Table K (Rev. 5/9/2019):
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Permit issuance (every permit) | $25.00 |
| Forced-air furnace or air handler, 2,000 cfm or less | $14.00 |
| Air conditioning, 5 tons or less (with or without coil) | $11.00 |
| Cooling coil only | $8.00 |
| Boiler (residential only) | $19.00 |
| Gas fireplace, solid fuel, pellet stove, gas logs or insert | $14.00 each |
| Chimney liner | $9.00 |
| Residential dryer vent | $14.00 |
| Repairs/alterations | $18.00 |
| Any equipment not listed | $7.00 |
A heat pump with an air handler is $25.00 + $14.00 + $11.00 = $50.00 as well. Permits expire if work does not start within 180 days or stops for 180 days.
Who can pull it
A licensed mechanical contractor, whose license number goes on Form 1. For homeowners, MABCD's Do I Need a Permit? page sends mechanical work to one person: "Must contact Mechanical Chief – (316) 660-1829." The general homeowner terms on that page still apply: you "must own and occupy the home", a non-occupying owner "MUST use a licensed contractor", and the permit holder is responsible for "scheduling and passing all inspections". A contractor who asks you to pull the permit is, in MABCD's words, "a red flag"; look the firm up under Lookup Contractor License in the MABCD Online LookUp.
How to apply
- List the equipment on Form 1 (furnace cfm, AC tonnage, fireplaces, vents), or file on the MABCD Portal; trade permits "can be obtained online at MABCD Portal or in-person" at 271 W. 3rd St. N., Suite 101.
- A homeowner calls the Mechanical Chief first.
- Pay the issuance fee plus items, then schedule and pass the inspections before MABCD closes the permit.

The west-side ZIPs 67212 and 67205 lead, with 67206 (east Wichita) third. Monthly counts are on Wichita HVAC permits, all categories on Wichita permit statistics, and rows on Wichita permits.

What this does not tell you
The file names no contractor, carries no job value on mechanical permits and has no final inspection date, so we show no cost or time to final. HVAC work done under a building permit is not counted here.
How we know this
Rules, fees and homeowner terms are quoted from MABCD's Permits and Do I Need a Permit? pages, its Table K fee table (Rev. 5/9/2019) and Form 1, read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City of Wichita's MABCD Permits SDE layer, read 19 October 2026: mechanical permits on City of Wichita property applied for October 2024 to September 2026 that were issued.
Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- Do I need a permit to replace a furnace or AC in Wichita?
Yes. MABCD issues mechanical permits on its Form 1, and its Table K fee table prices a forced-air furnace (2,000 cfm or less) at $14.00 and an air conditioner of 5 tons or less at $11.00, plus the $25.00 issuance fee. MABCD issued 5,956 HVAC permits on City of Wichita property from October 2024 to September 2026.
- How much is an HVAC permit in Wichita?
For a typical home furnace and AC swap: $25.00 issuance + $14.00 furnace + $11.00 condenser of 5 tons or less = $50.00 under MABCD's Table K. A residential boiler is $19.00, a gas fireplace $14.00 and a residential dryer vent $14.00.
- Can a homeowner pull a mechanical permit in Wichita?
MABCD's Do I Need a Permit? page says that for mechanical work you 'Must contact Mechanical Chief – (316) 660-1829'. You also have to own and live in the home; a non-occupying owner must use a licensed contractor.
- When do Wichita HVAC permits peak?
In July, at an index of 151 against an average month of 100, from October 2024 to September 2026. December is the quietest (64), so a planned replacement is easiest to schedule in early winter.
- Do Wichita HVAC permits get closed?
Almost all: 99.4% of HVAC permits issued October 2024 to September 2025 were closed by MABCD, and 0.2% expired.
