Overland Park building permit search: the City's permit report, statuses and limits

The City of Overland Park, Kansas publishes its permits as the Building Permit Report, a City ArcGIS layer with each permit's case number, work class, status, issue and finalized dates, valuation and street address. It is the source of our 13,840 Overland Park permits from January 2024 to September 2026. The City's permits directory lists which permits the City requires but links no public permit search (read 24 October 2026), so for anything the report does not hold, call City Hall at 913-895-6000, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

How to look up the permits on an Overland Park address

  1. Open the Building Permit Report layer and use its query page.
  2. Filter the MainAddressLine1 field for your street address (for example, a "where" clause with LIKE and the house number).
  3. Read each row's WorkClass, PermitStatus, IssueDate and FinalizedDate. A furnace, a water heater and a deck are separate permits.
  4. For a permit older than January 2024, one that expired, or a re-roof, call City Hall at 913-895-6000 and ask for Planning and Development Services.

What the statuses mean

Status in the City report What it means How we count it
Complete/Finaled Final inspection passed Finished
TCO Temporary certificate of occupancy, not yet final Open
Issued Issued, no final yet Open

Of the permits issued January 2024 to September 2025, 77.8% had finished and 22.2% were still open by our 19 October 2026 snapshot. Because the City leaves expired permits out of the report, none show as expired, and an Issued permit from 2024 may be one that lapsed. HVAC and plumbing were the least likely to be finaled: 55.7% each, against 89.6% for electrical, in the same months.

What this does not tell you

The City's report names no contractor, so we cannot say who did the work, and it has no roofing permits. Its window starts in January 2024, so it says nothing about older work on a house. The value is the valuation on the permit, not the final cost.

How we know this

The directory contents and City Hall contact are from the City of Overland Park's Permits, Licenses and Inspections Directory, read 24 October 2026. Field names, statuses and our counts are from the City's Building Permit Report layer, read 19 October 2026: permits issued January 2024 to September 2026.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Overland Park?

For a permit issued since January 2024, filter the City's published Building Permit Report by your street address. For anything older, or a permit that expired or was voided, call City Hall at 913-895-6000 and ask Planning and Development Services.

  • Why can't I find an expired Overland Park permit online?

The City's published report holds only permits issued since January 2024 whose status is Issued, TCO or Complete/Finaled. Expired, voided and withdrawn permits are not in it, so ask the City directly.

  • How long does an Overland Park permit take to final?

For permits issued January 2024 to September 2025, the usual one was finalized 76 days after issue. Plumbing took 15 days, HVAC and electrical 21, remodels 117 and new homes 318.

  • Does Overland Park issue roofing permits?

The City's published report has no roofing permits, so re-roofs are not in our 13,840 Overland Park permits from January 2024 to September 2026. Ask the City whether your re-roof needs one.

  • Does this cover Leawood, Olathe or Lenexa?

No. Leawood, Olathe, Lenexa, Merriam and the other Johnson County cities run their own permit offices. Only the City of Overland Park is in this report.
