How to check permits on a Citrus Heights address

  1. If the permit is on your account, log in to the customer portal (create an account first) and open the project.
  2. Read its status and the inspections booked or passed.
  3. If the permit is not on your account (a house you are buying, or a permit the contractor pulled), email Building@citrusheights.net with the address and ask for the permits on file; phone hours are weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  4. For copies, file a public records request with the address and the years.
  5. Compare the contractor on each permit with the firm you hired; the business license rule above means the firm must also hold a City business license.

What the statuses mean

In the City's permit file, a permit is finished when it is Permit Finalled, or Closed with a finalled date. Closed with no finalled date is an administrative close, usually an expired permit, and counts against the firm. Inspections means the permit is still open (Citrus Heights about page; methodology).

Trade Permits Firms Finalled (a year or more old) Usual days to final
HVAC 2,212 302 81.7% 62
Roofing 1,850 365 85.4% 21
Water heaters 938 158 66.8% 40
Electrical 1,445 344 59.3% 54
Remodel 713 244 75.1% 101
Windows 323 61 80.8% 56

Re-roofs finish fast here, usually in 21 days, so a roofing permit still in Inspections months later is unusual. Electrical permits are the ones most often left open: 59.3% finalled.

Requesting records

The City Clerk's Public Records page says to "complete our online request form or email PublicRecords@citrusheights.net", that requests "will be reviewed within 24 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) and responded to within 10 days", and that the Clerk's Office is on 916-725-2448 (read 23 October 2026).
