Wheaton, IL building permit search: the open permit data and FOIA requests

The quickest public way to look up a Wheaton permit is the City's open data. The Permit Applications dataset on Wheaton's Open Data Portal lists each permit's issue date, status, number, type, description, value, address and primary contact, and Permit Inspections holds the inspections (read 23 October 2026). The City's own permit portal is for applicants: "You will need your User ID and Password to access your permit information" (Building Permit Status). In our Wheaton file, 1,253 firms pulled 5,250 permits on homes from October 2023 to September 2026.

How to look up permits on a Wheaton address

  1. Open Permit Applications and go to the data table.
  2. Filter Address for your street and number.
  3. Read each row's Permit_Type, Status, Date_Issued and Primary_Contact.
  4. Take the permit number to Permit Inspections to see whether the final passed.
  5. Questions go to Building and Code Enforcement, 303 W Wesley Street, 630-260-2050. Contractor registration and state license checks are in the Wheaton contractor license lookup.

What the statuses mean

Wheaton's permit file has two statuses, Issued and Complete. Our pages count Complete as finished. The permit file has no completion date, so we date a Complete permit by its last passing inspection. Roofing permits are closed administratively with almost no inspections on record, so roofing shows no finished share or speed (Wheaton about page; methodology).

Trade Permits Firms Complete (a year or more old) Usual days to complete
Roofing 917 295 not measured not measured
Windows and doors 630 110 61.2% 83
HVAC 1,060 69 47.3% 398
Electrical 398 114 52.5% 159
Fence 552 74 80.0% 375
Deck 187 91 89.2% 111
Remodel 283 142 92.4% 132

About half of year-old HVAC permits here are still Issued, so an open furnace or AC permit is common; it is still worth asking the installer to call for the final.

When the record is not online

The City's Online FOIA Request page asks you first to check "the City's Open Data Portal" and its list of information that needs no FOIA request. The City "prefers that you submit FOIA requests using this online submission form", or a printed form in person or by mail; requests sent as attachments "will not be accepted", and "The City has 5 days to respond to most types of FOIA requests" (read 23 October 2026).

What our Wheaton data adds

The open data is one row per permit. Ours groups the same permits by firm: the Wheaton permit statistics, and the compare lists for roofers, windows, HVAC and remodelers. Which jobs need a permit: Do I need a permit?

  • How do I request old Wheaton permit records?
