Do I need an electrical permit in Greensboro? Who can pull it, the fee schedule and inspections

Yes: Greensboro says "All electrical, plumbing and mechanical work needs a separate permit for each trade", so wiring work on a house needs its own electrical permit even inside a larger job. The City issued 17,544 electrical permits on homes from October 2023 to September 2026, and the usual one reached its final inspection 52 days after issue.

The Greensboro rule

The City's Building Permits FAQs (read 23 October 2026) require a building permit for the "construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair" of a building and a separate permit for each trade. The City does not publish a list of electrical jobs that are exempt. Before skipping a permit on a fixture or device swap, ask Development Services on 336-373-2155; adding a circuit, a panel, a service or a subpanel is permit work.

Who can pull it: a licensed electrician, or you

Greensboro's Residential Construction page lets a homeowner get an electrical permit when:

  • "You own and live in the house (must show proof)";
  • "You are going to do the work yourself" on your residence; and
  • you "sign an affidavit of ownership and terms of permits and inspections".

If someone else does the work, it has to be a contractor licensed by the North Carolina Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. The license class (Limited, Intermediate, Unlimited) caps the job size; check it on the board's license search.

How to apply and get inspected

  1. Apply with Development Services, 300 W. Washington Street, Greensboro, 336-373-2155, Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm. The City says permits are paid at the time of application by check, cash or card.
  2. Keep the permit card on site. The City notes inspectors' laptops update only twice a day, so the signed card is how inspection status is tracked during the job.
  3. Request inspections through APRIL at 336-373-2400 with the permit number. "Inspection requests must be made by 8 pm the previous business day of the inspection request date."
  4. Check the result on the GSO BI Scheduler by address or permit number. A finished permit shows Final Inspection Made.

What it costs

From the City's Electrical Permit Fee Schedule (Document #4100, dated 7/16/24):

Item Fee
Minimum permit fee $85.00
100 / 150 / 200-amp service $74.00 / $90.00 / $99.00
400-amp service $131.00
Panel $10.00
Outlets (receptacles, switches) and lighting fixtures $0.30 each
Air conditioner or motor, 0–4 HP; furnace; water heater; range; dryer $10.00 each
Transfer switch (automatic or manual) $10.00
Emergency generator set $0.50 per kVA
Spa, hot tub, hydromassage tub $20.00
Residential swimming pool $65.00
Extra inspection, first follow-up $45.00
More than 3 inspections on a crawl-space house, or 4 on a slab house $45.00 each

Small jobs land at the $85 minimum; a 200-amp service with a new panel adds up to $109 by the schedule's lines. The schedule has no separate line for EV chargers or solar; ask Development Services which line applies. The real cost driver is a failed inspection at $45 a visit. National prices for the work are in electrical work cost.

What this does not tell you

The file covers City of Greensboro permits; houses outside city limits are permitted by Guilford County. A final inspection means the work passed, not what it cost. The fee schedule is dated July 2024; confirm the amount when you apply.

How we know this

Permit rules and the homeowner conditions are quoted from the City of Greensboro's Building Permits FAQs and Residential Construction pages, read 23 October 2026; fees from the City's Electrical Permit Fee Schedule, Document #4100 dated 7/16/24. Counts are City of Greensboro electrical permits on homes, October 2023 to September 2026; finished share uses permits a year or more old, and days to final is the median from issue to the final inspection.

Numbers come from City of Greensboro building and trade permits, data through October 18, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
