Pitt County building permit search: the county permitting portal and what the file shows

To look up a permit in Pitt County, North Carolina, use the county's Permitting Portal. The county says "Residents and contractors can view and manage permit records through Pitt County's online permitting portal, including building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, manufactured home, and gas piping permits" (Permitting and Inspections, read 24 October 2026). Its user guide describes a Search page that takes a permit number or an address. In the county's open permit tables, the county issued 8,293 permits from November 2022 to October 2024.

Which addresses this covers

Pitt County Planning & Development inspects unincorporated Pitt County and the towns that contract with it, such as Ayden, Simpson, Grifton, Grimesland, Bethel, Fountain and Falkland. Greenville, Winterville and Farmville run their own inspections, so a house inside those towns will not be in the county portal. A Greenville or Winterville mailing address in the county file is usually just outside the town line.

Tool Search by What it shows
Pitt County Permitting Portal Permit number or address (per the county's guide) The permit record, its status and inspections; the county says it covers building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, manufactured home and gas piping permits
Today's Inspections, in the same portal Permit number or project address Inspections booked for a day, with the inspector's name and phone number
PittOpenData Tables (open data) Any field, including the contractor Building, electrical, plumbing, gas and manufactured-home permit tables; our source

How to look up the permits on a Pitt County address

  1. Open the Permitting Portal. The county's guide has you click Login or Register at the top right and create an account first.
  2. Click Search in the navigation menu.
  3. Enter the permit number (the guide says to select Exact Phrase) or the address. For an address, leave off the suffix, directional and unit number, as the guide advises for its inspection search.
  4. Open each permit. Electrical, plumbing and gas work are separate permits from the building permit, so one job can have several.
  5. If you have an older permit that is not linked to your account, the county asks you to contact the department "with your name, email address, and project or permit number" so staff can attach it.

We could not load the portal's search screen without a browser, so the steps above follow the county's guide, read 24 October 2026.

What the county file records

The portal shows each permit's own status. The county's open data tables do not, which limits what our pages can say:

In the county's open permit tables Recorded?
Issue date, kind of permit, site address Yes
Contractor firm name On 63% of permits, November 2022 to October 2024
Declared job value Building permits only
Status (issued, finaled, expired) No
Final inspection date No
Heating and air-conditioning permits No: the table labelled Mechanical holds only manufactured-home set-ups

The published tables also stop early: electrical permits end in November 2024 and building permits in April 2025, so our window ends in October 2024, the last month every table is complete.

When the record is not online

The county's pages do not describe a separate archive request for permit files. Call Permitting and Inspections at 252-902-3150, the number on the county's page, and give the address and any permit number you have. County records are public under North Carolina's public records law, G.S. Chapter 132.

What our Pitt County pages add

The portal answers "what was permitted at this address". Our Pitt County page shows what gets built in the county's area and when, from the county's open tables, November 2022 to October 2024:

Kind of work Permits (Nov 2022–Oct 2024) Last 12 months on file (Nov 2023–Oct 2024)
Electrical 4,555 2,512
Plumbing 1,910 1,034
New homes 942 551
Garages, sheds and shade structures 277 140
Remodels and repairs 187 92
Pools and spas 101 55

81% of the 8,293 permits were for homes. New-home permits rose 41% between the two 12-month halves of the window (391 to 551). The permit statistics page breaks the file down by year, month and season, permits by ZIP code shows where the work is (28513 led with 2,184 permits, November 2022 to October 2024), and browse permits lists the rows without owner names or street addresses. To check the license of a firm on a permit, use How to check a contractor's license in North Carolina.

What this does not tell you

The county's tables have no status and no final date, so we can't say how many permits finished or how long they took; check each permit in the portal for that. We count permits per firm but don't rate or rank them. A permit on file means the county issued it, not that the work passed.

How we know this

The portal's coverage and search steps are quoted from Pitt County's Permitting and Inspections page and Permitting Portal User Guide, read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the county's PittOpenData permit tables, read 21 October 2026: permits issued November 2022 to October 2024 by the county's inspections office, outside Greenville, Winterville and Farmville.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 21, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Pitt County?

Open the Pitt County Permitting Portal, click Search and enter the permit number or the address. The county's user guide describes this search; it says to create an account with Login or Register first. If the house is inside Greenville, Winterville or Farmville, ask that town instead.

  • Does Pitt County handle permits for Greenville?

No. Greenville, Winterville and Farmville run their own inspections. The county covers unincorporated Pitt County and the towns that contract with it, such as Ayden, Grifton, Grimesland, Bethel and Fountain.

  • Can I search Pitt County permits by contractor?

The county's user guide describes searching by permit number or address. The county's open permit tables name a contractor firm on 63% of the 8,293 permits issued November 2022 to October 2024; our Pitt County page counts permits per firm but does not rank them.

  • Can I see whether a Pitt County permit passed final inspection?

Check the permit itself in the portal. The county's open data tables carry no status and no final inspection date, so our pages can't say which permits were finished.

  • How many permits does Pitt County issue?

About 4,146 a year: 8,293 building, electrical, plumbing, gas and manufactured-home permits from November 2022 to October 2024, 4,555 of them electrical.
