Getting the permit vs finishing the work: two different clocks

“How long does a permit take?” can mean two waits. This page measures the second one.

Getting the permit (not measured): application → issue, the wait for the city to approve the plans. Ask the city for its current review times.

Finishing the work (measured here): issue → final. From the day the city issued the permit to the day it recorded the final inspection. We count only permits issued Oct 2024–Sep 2025, at least 12 months before the file ends, so slow jobs have had time to finish; a permit still open is not in the days.

How these numbers are made

Source: City of Arlington GIS, OpenData/OD_Property: Issued Permits (3-year view), read 19 Oct 2026. We count permits issued October 2024 through September 2026; denied and withdrawn permits are left out.

Building, fence, pool and sign permits the City of Arlington, Texas issues inside city limits. Not to be confused with Arlington, Virginia, which has its own pages on this site. Electrical, plumbing, mechanical and roofing permits are not in the city's public file, and neither are certificates of occupancy.

  • The city's file names no contractor, so there are no contractor lists, rankings or firm pages for Arlington.
  • The city publishes only building, fence, pool and sign permits. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and roofing permits are not in the file, so those kinds of work do not appear here.
  • The city keeps a rolling three-year view: older permits drop out of the file, so there is no history before late 2023.
  • The value is the construction valuation declared on the permit; sign permits carry none.
  • The file has no ZIP code, so there are no ZIP code pages.

Counts are permits, not jobs: one job can need several permits. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can. Sources and definitions →
