Getting the permit vs finishing the work: two different clocks

“How long does a permit take?” can mean two waits. This page measures the second one.

Getting the permit (not measured): application → issue, the wait for the city to approve the plans. Ask the city for its current review times.

Finishing the work (measured here): issue → final. From the day the city issued the permit to the day it recorded the final inspection. We count only permits issued Oct 2024–Sep 2025, at least 12 months before the file ends, so slow jobs have had time to finish; a permit still open is not in the days.

Source: City of Edina Permit Finder, PIMS Permits table (ArcGIS Building/Permit_Finder FeatureServer layer 5), read 19 Oct 2026. We count permits issued October 2024 through September 2026; denied and withdrawn permits are left out.

Permits the City of Edina issues for houses, townhouses and two-family homes inside the city: building, remodel, reroof, siding, deck and addition permits, mechanical and plumbing permits, home sewer and water work, and solar. Commercial, institutional and apartment (3+ unit) permits, signs, driveways, grading and tree escrows in the same table are not counted. Minneapolis, Bloomington, Richfield and the other Hennepin County cities run their own permit offices and are not in this file.

  • The city's permit table names no contractor, so there are no contractor lists, rankings or firm pages for Edina.
  • The table has no electrical permits, so there are no electrical counts here.
  • The table has no status column. A permit with a final date counts as finished, one with a dead date as expired and one with a cancelled date is left out; all others are open.
  • The city files most furnace, air conditioner, water heater, softener and gas piping permits under one broad residential type. We sort them into HVAC and plumbing by their work description; a permit that names both counts under the trade it names first.
  • The value is the valuation on the permit. The ZIP code comes from the Metropolitan Council's 2025 parcel points for the permit's parcel.

Counts are permits, not jobs: one job can need several permits. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can. Sources and definitions →
