How to look up the permits on a Carlsbad address
- Open the Online Permit Portal from the City's online services page ("Apply for, check your building permit status or pay fees").
- Search for your address or permit number and open each permit. Carlsbad issues one building permit per job, so a re-roof, a solar system or a water heater is its own building permit.
- Read the status. Closed - Finaled means the City passed the final inspection.
- If the permit isn't online, email building@carlsbadca.gov or call 442-339-2719. The City asks you to "provide your street address or the plan check number assigned when you submitted your plans" (Q&A, read 24 October 2026).
- For older plans, see the request steps below, or view them at the Faraday Center counter.
What the statuses mean
In the City's 2022–2023 layer the status is as of January 2024, when the layer was last updated.
| Status | What it means | In our counts |
|---|---|---|
| Closed - Finaled | Final inspection passed; the City records a completed date | Finished |
| Expired | Lapsed before final | Expired |
| Void or withdrawn | Cancelled | Left out |
| Any other status | Issued, still open | Open |
Of the permits issued April to December 2022, 65% had reached Closed - Finaled by January 2024.
When the record is not online
The City's Duplication of Building Plans page (read 24 October 2026) sets out the steps:
- Email building@carlsbadca.gov with the site address to ask whether the City has plans.
- Fill in the Affidavit Request for Duplication of Copyrighted Plans (B-43). An owner completes the upper section, and a recent buyer adds a copy of the recorded grant deed; anyone else needs the owner's notarized Authorization of Agent or a signed letter from the owner.
- Submit it in the Online Permit Portal under BLDG Miscellaneous Services.
- The City sends certified notices to the design professionals of record, who have 30 days to respond. Fees follow the Master Fee Schedule, and the City emails when they are due.
The City keeps plans for most new construction permitted after 1980 but typically not for residential remodels or additions. For a building from before Carlsbad incorporated on July 16, 1952, check the County of San Diego Planning & Development Services.
What our Carlsbad pages add
The Carlsbad page counts permits issued April 2022 to December 2023. Days to final are for permits issued April to December 2022:

Blank cells had fewer than 100 permits issued April to December 2022. Pools and spas were the slowest kind of work to final in that period, at 273 days. How long does a permit take? has the full timing, the permit statistics page has the file by month, browse permits lists the rows, and the ZIP code pages split the counts by ZIP. To check a contractor's license, see How to check a contractor's license in California.
What this does not tell you
The City's open layer holds only permits applied for in 2022 and 2023 and was last updated in January 2024, so our pages stop at December 2023; newer Carlsbad permits are only in the City's own portal. The layer names no contractor and carries no job value, so we show no contractor lists and no costs.
How we know this
The viewing, contact and plan-copy steps are quoted from the City of Carlsbad's Duplication of Building Plans and Community Development Q&A pages, read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City of Carlsbad GIS BuildingPermits layer (BLDS format), read 19 October 2026: permits issued April 2022 to December 2023, status as of January 2024.
Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
