Greenville, SC building permit search: the city's permit map and what it covers

For a building permit inside City of Greenville, South Carolina limits, the public lookup the city publishes is its Building Permits GIS page ("Building permit maps and statistics for the City of Greenville, SC"), backed by the BuildingPermits_PriorTwoYears permit layer. Each permit in it carries the permit number, street address, description, valuation, issue date, status and contractor name, so you can find a permit by address, permit number or contractor. We found no public permit-status portal on greenvillesc.gov (checked 24 October 2026). In our file the city issued 2,982 building and demolition permits from October 2024 to September 2026.

Which addresses and permits this covers

The City of Greenville Building Codes division issues permits inside the city limits only. Homes with a Greenville mailing address outside the city, such as Taylors, Berea and the edges of Mauldin, get permits from Greenville County. The city's layer is a rolling window of roughly the last two years and holds building and demolition permits only: no electrical, plumbing or mechanical permits.

Tool Search by What it shows
Building Permits map page Map location City building permits on a map, with summary statistics
BuildingPermits_PriorTwoYears layer Any field: STREETADDRESS, PERMIT_NUM, CONTRACTOR_NAME Permit type and description, valuation, issue date (NewIssueDate), status (BP_STATUS), contractor; our source

How to look up the permits on a Greenville address

  1. Confirm the property is inside city limits. If it is in unincorporated Greenville County, the city has no record of it.
  2. Open the city's Building Permits page and find the property on the map.
  3. For a list, open the permit layer, choose Query, and search STREETADDRESS with the house number and street, for example STREETADDRESS LIKE '100 MAIN%'.
  4. Read PERMIT_NUM, APPLIC_DESCRIPTION (for example RESIDENTIAL, ALTERATION), NewIssueDate, BP_STATUS and CONTRACTOR_NAME for each permit. Ignore APPLICDATE: in the city's file it reads 1970 on every row.
  5. Check the contractor's licence at the South Carolina LLR license lookup.

What the statuses mean

BP_STATUS in the city's file What it means
CL Closed
IS Issued, still open

The file does not mark permits expired, so a lapsed permit still reads IS. Of permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 69.7% were closed and 30.3% still open by our count.

When the record you want is not online

Permits older than the two-year window, and all electrical, plumbing and HVAC permits, are not in the city's published layer. Ask the Building & Permit Center, or make a South Carolina Freedom of Information Act request; the city's Freedom of Information (FOIA) page explains how to make one.

What our Greenville pages add

Our Greenville page counts the city's building permit file by kind of work, October 2024 to September 2026:

Kind of work Permits (Oct 2024–Sep 2026) Last 12 months (Oct 2025–Sep 2026)
New homes 750 297
Remodels and repairs 663 300
Additions 533 286
Demolition 222 103
Garages, sheds and shade structures 135 65

78% of the 2,982 permits were for homes. The permit statistics page has counts by year and month, and browse permits lists the rows.

What this does not tell you

The city's file has no final date and no property ZIP code, so we show no time to final and no ZIP code pages. Its valuation is the figure declared on the permit, not the final price. Window and door replacements count as remodels; roofing, solar and pool jobs are picked out of alteration permits by their comments.

How we know this

The portal description and permit fields are read from the City of Greenville's Building Permits GIS page and permit layer on 24 October 2026; the city's Building & Permit Center and FOIA pages were checked the same day. Our counts are the city's BuildingPermits_PriorTwoYears layer, read 19 October 2026: building and demolition permits issued October 2024 to September 2026, City of Greenville only.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Greenville, SC?

If the house is inside City of Greenville limits, check the city's Building Permits map page or filter its permit layer by street address. It holds city building and demolition permits from about the last two years. For older permits, or for electrical, plumbing and HVAC permits, ask the City's Building & Permit Center.

  • Can I look up Greenville permits by contractor name?

Yes, in the city's permit layer: the CONTRACTOR_NAME field is filled on 99.4% of permits in it. We don't rank or rate firms from those names because we have not matched them to South Carolina licence records.

  • My address says Greenville but the city has no permits for it. Why?

Many Greenville mailing addresses (Taylors, Berea, parts near Mauldin and the rest of unincorporated Greenville County) are outside city limits. Those permits come from Greenville County Building Safety, not the City of Greenville.

  • What does CL mean on a Greenville building permit?

In the city's permit layer, BP_STATUS CL means the permit is closed and IS means issued and still open. Of permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 69.7% were closed by our count.

  • How many building permits does the City of Greenville issue?

About 1,491 building and demolition permits a year: 2,982 from October 2024 to September 2026. New homes (750), remodels and repairs (663) and additions (533) led that window.
