Huntsville building permit search: what is online, and how to ask for the rest

The City of Huntsville, Alabama has no open public permit search. Its online permitting and inspection system is for buying trade permits and scheduling inspections, and it says "The tax payer I.D. and pass code will be required to enable this system" (read 24 October 2026). For anyone else, the routes are the Inspection Office (256-427-5331, 305 Fountain Circle), a public records request, or the City's GIS permit layer, which is our source: 5,398 building permits issued October 2024 to September 2026.

Which permits and addresses this covers

The City permits work inside its limits, which reach into Madison, Limestone and Morgan counties. The City of Madison, unincorporated Madison County and the nearby towns run their own offices.

Tool Search by What it shows
Online permitting and inspections Login (taxpayer ID and passcode) Trade permits, inspection results and inspector comments, for the contractor or owner on the permit
BuildingPermits layer (City GIS) Any field, including address Building permits since November 2020: type of work, occupancy type, contract amount, issue date
OccupancyCerts layer (City GIS) Permit ID Certificates of occupancy and their dates
Public records request Your written request Anything not online, including trade permits

The GIS layers hold building permits only: new construction, alterations, additions, accessory buildings and demolitions. The City's Building License & Permits page says "Most trades for electrical, plumbing, mechanical, gas and as well some roofing & siding permits can be obtained online", and those are not published.

How to check the permits on a Huntsville address

  1. If you are the owner on the permit, log in to the online system with the taxpayer ID and passcode to see permits and inspection results.
  2. Otherwise, call the Inspection Office at 256-427-5331 (Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) with the address and ask which permits are on file and whether each passed final.
  3. For a building permit since November 2020, query the BuildingPermits layer by its Address field, then look the PermitID up in the OccupancyCerts layer.
  4. For trade permits, older permits or copies, file a records request (below).

What finished means in this file

The City's file has no status and no final inspection date. We count a building permit as finished once the City issues a certificate of occupancy for it, and use the certificate's date as the end.

What the file shows How we count it
Certificate of occupancy on file Finished
No certificate yet Open

That works for new homes: 92.4% of new home permits issued October 2024 to September 2025 had a certificate by our 19 October 2026 snapshot. Alterations and additions often get no certificate, so only 29.1% of remodel and 24.0% of addition permits from the same months count as finished. An open remodel permit here is not evidence of a problem; ask the Inspection Office whether it passed final.

When the record is not online

The City Clerk says "The submission of a fully completed Public Records Request Form is the exclusive procedure for requesting public records"; the form is online, and requests sent any other way are not answered. The fee is a nonrefundable $25 minimum covering the first hour, then $25 an hour, plus 50 cents a black-and-white page, and "Records will not be released until full payment is received". The page says Alabama citizens may inspect and copy public records (read 24 October 2026).

What our Huntsville pages add

The Huntsville page adds the City's building permits up. Counts are permits issued October 2024 to September 2026; finished share and days are for permits issued October 2024 to September 2025.

Kind of work Permits (Oct 2024–Sep 2026) Finished (Oct 2024–Sep 2025 permits) Usual days to certificate
New homes 2,111 92.4% 156
Remodels and repairs 1,079 29.1% 179
Additions 655 24.0% 262
Demolition 212 — —
Garages, sheds and shade structures 111 — —

New home permits rose 32% from the first year of the window to the second (908 to 1,203). The permit statistics page has year and month counts, how long permits take has the days by kind, and browse permits lists the rows.

What this does not tell you

The City's file names no contractor, so we cannot say who did the work, and it has no electrical, plumbing, mechanical, gas or roofing permits and no ZIP code. The value is the contract amount on the permit.

How we know this

The login requirement is quoted from the City of Huntsville Inspection Department's online system, the trade-permit note from its Building License & Permits page, and the records process and fees from the City Clerk's Public Records Request page, all read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City's BuildingPermits and OccupancyCerts GIS layers, read 19 October 2026: building permits issued October 2024 to September 2026.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
