Montgomery, AL building permit search: the Online Permitting Portal and the City's permit file

For a building permit in Montgomery, Alabama, the City's Department of Inspections takes applications through its Online Permitting Portal, linked from the Inspections page; the City's permit FAQ says you register as "Not Contractor" or "Contractor" (read 24 October 2026). Neither page says what the portal searches by. To check what was permitted on an address, the City's Construction Permit Data file, updated daily, lists each permit with its number, address, status and contractor. In that file the City issued 13,364 permits from October 2024 to September 2026.

Where to look for Montgomery permits

The City permits property in the city and its police jurisdiction. Pike Road, Prattville, Millbrook and the rest of Montgomery County outside that jurisdiction are not covered.

How to look up the permits on a Montgomery address

  1. Open Construction Permit Data (or find it on the City's open data hub, opendata.montgomeryal.gov) and filter the address field to your street.
  2. Or search by the permit number on your paperwork. Building permit numbers look like BD241784.
  3. Read every permit on the property. A remodel can need separate building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and gas permits.
  4. Check each status (table below) and the contractor name. The file names contractors mostly under the licence holder's personal name, not the company, so ask your contractor whose licence they pull under.
  5. For an answer on a specific permit, call 334-625-2073; the City says to call that number "to schedule an appointment for service".

What the statuses mean

The City's file uses these status values for permits:

Status in the City data What it means How we count it
COMPLETED The City closed the permit out Finished
ISSUED, APPROVED Issued or approved, not closed Open
VOID, DENIED Cancelled or refused Not counted

Of the permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 37.9% were Completed and 62.1% still open by our 20 October 2026 snapshot. About six in ten 2024 permits are marked Completed against three in ten 2025 and 2026 permits, so the City is still closing recent permits out; an Issued status on a recent job is common. The file has no final inspection date, so we show no time to final.

What this does not tell you

Because contractors are mostly named as people, we do not list or rank firms for Montgomery. The estimated cost is a real job value on building permits only; trade permits carry a nominal figure.

How we know this

The portal registration options are from the City of Montgomery's Inspection & Permit FAQs, and the phone number from its Inspections page, both read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City's Construction Permit Data layer, read 20 October 2026: permits issued October 2024 to September 2026.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 20, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
