New Braunfels building permit search: look up permits by address or contractor

To look up a permit in New Braunfels, use the City's Permit Search & Permit Status page. The City's Permits page calls it an "online tool to check on the status of a permit or to search through permits issued by the City of New Braunfels". Its form takes a permit number, permit type, applicant name, contractor name, contractor type, location address and a date range, and it opened without a login on 24 October 2026. In the City's open permit file, 13,252 building and trade permits were issued from October 2024 to September 2026.

How to look up the permits on a New Braunfels address

  1. Open Permit Search & Permit Status.
  2. Type the street number and name in Location Address. Leave Permit Type at "All Permit Types" the first time.
  3. Add a start and end date if the address has a long history.
  4. Read the status of each result. Plumbing, electrical, mechanical, irrigation and roofing work are separate permits from the building permit.
  5. To check a firm, clear the address and search Contractor Name instead.

What the statuses mean

These are the statuses in the City's file and how our pages count them:

Status in the City file What it means How we count it
Closed, Approved and Closed, Cert Issue The City closed the permit Finished
Issued, Approved, In Progress Permit active; work under way or never closed out Open
Expired Lapsed without a close-out Expired
Denied, Canceled, Withdrawn, Void Never went ahead Left out

Of the permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 66.5% were closed and 33.5% were still open by our 19 October 2026 snapshot. The gap is mostly trade work: 91.7% of new-home permits were closed, but only 40.7% of HVAC and 41.4% of roofing permits. The City's Permits page says building permits "expire at 180 days" if no proof of work or progress is provided, with 90- or 180-day extensions granted case by case (read 24 October 2026), so an Issued permit from more than six months ago is worth asking about.

What our New Braunfels pages add

The public search answers "what was permitted at this address". Our New Braunfels page answers "what gets built here, and how fast the City closes it", from permits issued October 2024 to September 2026:

Kind of work Permits (Oct 2024–Sep 2026) Closed (issued Oct 2024–Sep 2025) Usual days to close (issued Oct 2024–Sep 2025)
New homes 2,356 91.7% 183
Plumbing 1,930 72.7% 23
Remodels and repairs 1,587 61.3% 71
HVAC 1,382 40.7% 76
Electrical 1,363 58.7% 84
Roofing 879 41.4% 20
Solar 210 67.8% 42
Pools and spas 195 56.7% 138

84% of the 13,252 permits issued October 2024 to September 2026 were on homes. The permit statistics page breaks them down by year, month and season, how long a permit takes has the middle-half ranges (the usual permit took 88 days, issued October 2024 to September 2025), permits by ZIP code shows where the work is (78130 had 6,747 permits in the same window), and browse permits lists the rows without owner names or street addresses. To check a contractor's state license, use How to check a contractor's license in Texas.

What this does not tell you

The City's open file carries no job value, so we show no costs. It names the contractor on most permits, but we have not matched those names to state license records, so we count permits per firm and do not rate or rank them. ZIP codes come from the address and are present on about 60% of permits. A closed permit means the City closed it, not what the work cost or whether you were happy with it.

How we know this

Search fields were read on the City's Permit Search & Permit Status page, and the expiration rules on the City's Permits page, on 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City of New Braunfels Permits open data layer, read 19 October 2026: building and trade permits issued October 2024 to September 2026, inside city limits.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through September 30, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in New Braunfels?

Open the City's Permit Search & Permit Status page (publicsearch.nbtexas.org) and type your street address in Location Address. No login is needed. Each result shows the permit number, type and status.

  • Can I search New Braunfels permits by contractor?

Yes. The City's public search has Contractor Name and Contractor Type fields, plus Applicant Name, so you can list a firm's permits in the city. Our pages count permits per firm but do not rate or rank them.

  • What does Issued mean on a New Braunfels permit?

The permit is active and the City has not closed it. Many trade permits stay at Issued long after the work: of HVAC permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, only 40.7% were closed by October 2026.

  • When does a New Braunfels building permit expire?

The City's permits page says residential and commercial building permits expire at 180 days if no proof of work or progress is provided, and that 90- or 180-day extensions can be granted case by case.

  • How long does a permit take to reach final in New Braunfels?

For permits issued October 2024 to September 2025 that the City closed, the usual permit took 88 days from issue (middle half 28 to 188 days). A re-roof usually took 20 days, a new home 183.
