Data through September 2026 · updated 19 Oct 2026
6,252 building permits were issued in Columbia from October 2024 to September 2026, about 3,126 a year. HVAC permits lead with 1,759, then electrical (1,016) and roofing (968). 72% were for homes. The city's file doesn't name contractors, so we can't rank, compare or profile firms here: these pages show what was built, where, when and how fast the city signed it off.
Building and trade permits the City of Columbia issues inside city limits for homes and other non-commercial work: new houses, duplexes and townhouses, home alterations and additions, re-roofs, heating and cooling, electrical, plumbing and gas, residential solar, decks and foundation repair. Commercial building permits, right-of-way and utility permits, fire systems, signs and grading in the same file are not counted, and neither is unincorporated Boone County, which issues its own permits.
