College Station building permit search: open data, eTRAKiT and records

The quickest public way to look up a College Station permit is the City's open dataset, Permits - Master Dataset, described as "All issued permits by the City of College Station since 1989". Filter the Address 1 column for your address and each row gives the permit number, type, description, issue date, current status and declared valuation. The City's permit system, eTRAKiT, has Search Permit and Search Property links, but when we tried them on 24 October 2026 both opened a login page. In our file the City issued 10,055 building and trade permits from October 2024 to September 2026.

Which addresses this covers

The City permits work inside College Station city limits. Bryan, unincorporated Brazos County and Texas A&M buildings on state land are not in the City's file.

Tool Search by What it shows
Permits - Master Dataset Any column: address, permit number, type, status, parcel (Site APN) Every issued permit since 1989 with status and valuation; no contractor

How to look up the permits on a College Station address

  1. Open Permits - Master Dataset and choose to view the data.
  2. Filter Address 1 for the house number and street name. Use the street as the City writes it; try just the number and the first word of the street if nothing comes back.
  3. Sort by Issued Date. A re-roof, an AC change-out and a water heater are separate permits.
  4. Read Current Status for each permit (table below) and the Permit Description for what was done.
  5. For a permit that still reads Issued years later, call Planning & Development Services at 979.764.3570 or email cspds@cstx.gov and ask whether it got a final inspection.

What the statuses mean

Status in the City file What it means How we count it
Finaled, Finaled Permit, Complete, Closed Final inspection passed Finished
Co Issued, Cc Issued Certificate of occupancy or completion issued Finished
Issued, Temporary Co, fees due Permit active, or never finaled Open
Expired…, Closed - Declined Inspection Lapsed without a final Expired
Void, Withdrawn, Denied Never went ahead Left out

Of the permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 59.6% had finished, 39.5% were still open and 0.9% had expired by our 19 October 2026 snapshot. That open share is the thing to know about this file: the City rarely moves an unfinished permit to Expired, so it stays Issued. The file has no final date, so neither the City's data nor our pages can say how long a permit took.

When the record is not online

Plans and inspection records are not in the dataset. The City's Records Requests page takes requests "online through the City's Public Records Center", in person at the City Secretary's Office, 1101 Texas Avenue, by mail to P.O. Box 9960, College Station, Texas 77842, or by email to pubrequest@cstx.gov. It notes "A request sent by mail or email will not be considered received unless sent to the appropriate designated address", and that information excepted under the Texas Public Information Act is referred to the attorney general (read 24 October 2026).

What our College Station pages add

The dataset is one row per permit. Our College Station page adds it up, from the same City records, October 2024 to September 2026:

Kind of work Permits (Oct 2024–Sep 2026) Last 12 months (Oct 2025–Sep 2026) 12 months before
HVAC 2,015 1,017 998
Plumbing 1,883 965 918
Electrical 1,470 746 724
Roofing 1,301 370 931
New homes 664 308 356
Remodels and repairs 246 119 127
Pools and spas 140 64 76

Re-roof permits fell 60% from one year to the next in this window. 43% of the 10,055 permits were for homes; plumbing, gas, mechanical and most electrical permits do not say whether the building is a home, so that share is low. The permit statistics page has the month-by-month counts and browse permits lists the rows. To check a Texas trade license on a permit, see How to check a contractor's license in Texas.

What this does not tell you

The City's file names no contractor, so there are no firm lists or rankings for College Station. Valuation is what was declared on the permit and is filled on about half of them, mostly building permits.

How we know this

The dataset description and columns are from data.cstx.gov; the weekly list, contractor registration and records process are from the City of College Station's Building Permits, Building Permits Issued and Records Requests pages; the eTRAKiT login was observed when we opened its search links. All read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City's Permits - Master Dataset (hrbn-znt6), read 19 October 2026: permits issued October 2024 to September 2026 inside city limits.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in College Station?

Open the City's Permits - Master Dataset on data.cstx.gov and filter Address 1 for your street address. The City describes it as all issued permits since 1989, and it shows each permit's type, description, issue date, current status and valuation. No account is needed.

  • Are College Station building permits public record?

Yes. The City publishes issued permits as open data and posts a weekly list of building permits issued the previous week. Files not online can be requested under the Texas Public Information Act.

  • How do I request an old College Station permit file?

Submit a records request through the City's Public Records Center, by email to pubrequest@cstx.gov, by mail to the City Secretary at P.O. Box 9960, College Station, TX 77842, or in person at 1101 Texas Avenue. The City says a mailed or emailed request only counts as received at those designated addresses.

  • Can I look up College Station permits by contractor?

Not in the open dataset: it has no contractor column. The City requires contractors to register before they get a permit, so ask yours for the permit number and look that number up in the dataset.

  • Why does my College Station permit still say Issued?

The City seldom marks a permit expired. Of permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 39.5% still read open (mostly Issued) in our 19 October 2026 snapshot, against 0.9% marked expired. An old Issued permit usually means the final inspection never happened.
