The rule
Henderson's administrative code (the City's posted ordinance for Municipal Code chapter 15.01, read 23 October 2026) says that unless a job is exempted, it may not be built or altered until the "appropriate building, electrical, plumbing" permit "has first been obtained" (15.01.125). The electrical exemptions in 15.01.140 are narrow. They include "Repair or replacement of fixed motors, transformers or fixed approved appliances", "Temporary decorative lighting", reinstalling receptacles, replacing an overcurrent device with one of the same capacity, low-voltage and power-limited wiring, and some like-for-like lighting replacement. A new circuit, a panel change, a service upgrade, a hot-tub feed or an EV charger circuit is not on the list.
The posted copy carries no ordinance number or adoption date. For a borderline job, ask the Development Services Center (702-267-1410) whether it is exempt before the work starts.
Who may pull it
| You are | Can you pull the electrical permit? | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| A licensed electrical contractor (NSCB electrical C specialty) | Yes | Nothing: this is the normal route |
| An owner who lives in the single-family house and does the work | Yes, under 15.01.230 | You sign the Owner/Builder statement and take responsibility for the work meeting code |
| An owner who hires an electrician but pulls the permit | Possible, but don't | The NSCB says "A claimant is not eligible for payment from the Fund if the claimant obtained any building permit for the project" |
| A handyman | No | NRS 624.031's $1,000 exemption excludes work that needs a permit and electrical work |
Section 15.01.230 sets the homeowner conditions: the owner must qualify for Nevada's owner-builder exemption in NRS 624.031, be "the bona fide owner of the real property", occupy the house, get separate permits for any building service equipment, and sign the application and the "Owner/Builder" statement. The Residential Recovery Fund pays up to $40,000 a claim when a licensed contractor's residential work goes wrong (NSCB, read 22 October 2026), so if someone else does the wiring, the contractor's name belongs on the permit.
Check the electrician's license, classification and monetary limit on the NSCB License Search; the steps are in the Henderson contractor license lookup.
How to apply and close it
- Apply in DSC Online, linked from the City's Building Online Services page. Pay at issue: "all fees must be paid" before or when the permit is issued (15.01.260).
- Fees: the code refers to Chapter 15.02 of the Municipal Code for the amounts. We could not read a current fee table on the City's site, so we quote none; DSC Online and the Development Services Center (702-267-1410) give the figure for your job.
- Inspections: the Building Official "does not conduct continuous inspections of work in progress" but inspects at stages (15.01.025). Request them in DSC Online and read the results there under "View inspection results".
- Confirm Done. A permit is finished when its status reads Done; Expired means it lapsed before final (Henderson building permit search).
What 2,256 Henderson electrical permits show
| Measure | Henderson electrical |
|---|---|
| Permits on homes, October 2023 to September 2026 | 2,256 |
| Firms | 203 |
| Firms with a permit in the last 12 months | 131 |
| Firms with one permit only | 67 (33.0%) |
| Done (permits a year or more old) | 77.6% |
| Usual days from issue to Done | 29 |
| 10th / 90th-percentile firm (10+ permits) | 54.1% / 90.8% |
| Busy firms under 70% Done | 13 of 37 |
| Five busiest firms' share | 35.3% |
| Firms with 5+ permits, none in the last 12 months | 12 |
| Busiest / quietest month | January (index 115) / December (80) |
The spread between firms is the useful part. Among the 37 electricians with 10 or more permits, the 10th-percentile firm reached Done on 54.1% of its permits and the 90th on 90.8%, and 13 were under 70%. An electrician near the top of that range books its finals; one near the bottom leaves permits open, which can surface when you sell. January is the busiest month for filings, so a winter panel job may wait longer for a start date.

What this does not tell you
Henderson publishes no job value on these permits, so we show no usual price. We have not matched Henderson firms to the NSCB file, so check the license yourself. Owner-builder permits name no firm and are not in the firm counts. The code text is the City's posted ordinance copy; the City's adopted text governs.
How we know this
The permit rule, exemptions, homeowner conditions, fee and inspection provisions are from the City of Henderson's posted Building and Fire Safety Administrative Code ordinance (chapter 15.01), read 23 October 2026; the Recovery Fund rule from the NSCB and the handyman rule from NRS 624.031, read 22 October 2026. Counts are City of Henderson electrical permits on homes, October 2023 to September 2026; "Done" uses permits a year or more old.
Numbers come from City of Henderson development services permits, data through October 14, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- Do I need a permit for electrical work in Henderson, NV?
For most of it, yes. Henderson's administrative code says no electrical work covered by the code may be done until the electrical permit is obtained, and exempts only a short list such as repair or replacement of fixed motors or fixed approved appliances and temporary decorative lighting.
- Can a homeowner pull an electrical permit in Henderson?
Only on a single-family house the owner lives in. The City's code lets a bona fide owner-occupant who qualifies for Nevada's owner-builder exemption get permits and sign an Owner/Builder statement taking responsibility for the work. If you hire an electrician, let the electrician pull it: the NSCB says a claimant who obtained any building permit for the project cannot claim on the Residential Recovery Fund.
- How long does an electrical permit take to final in Henderson?
In our file the usual Henderson electrical permit reached Done 29 days after issue, and 77.6% of those a year or more old were finaled.
- How much is an electrical permit in Henderson?
The administrative code says fees must be paid when the permit is issued and points to Chapter 15.02 of the Municipal Code for the amounts; we could not read a current fee table from the City's site. DSC Online shows the fee when you apply, or call the Development Services Center on 702-267-1410.
- Does a handyman need a license for electrical work in Henderson?
Yes. Nevada's $1,000 handyman exemption in NRS 624.031 does not cover electrical work or any job that needs a building permit, so an outlet, fixture circuit or panel job needs a licensed electrical contractor.
