How the records work in Boulder County (unincorporated)

We use public records to help you make a shortlist. They show what a contractor has filed and where they have worked in Boulder County (unincorporated). They can't tell you whether someone will be right for your home.

Is a contractor licensed in Boulder County (unincorporated)?

Boulder County licenses contractors who work in unincorporated areas, and electricians and plumbers also need a State of Colorado (DORA) license.

We don't hold the licensing board's file for Boulder County (unincorporated), so we don't show license status for the 1,270 firms on the permit file. Check each one yourself.

What the numbers mean

Typical cost

The middle value recorded on this contractor's matching permits. It's a permit value, not a quote or the final price. Ask for a written estimate.

Permits in the last 12 months on file

Matching Boulder County (unincorporated) permits in the most recent year of our data (May 2025–Apr 2026; the file ends Apr 2026). It shows recent recorded activity here, not every job the company did.

Completion rate

For contractors with at least 8 permits a year or more old, the share the County marked complete or closed. A permit can stay open because of paperwork or timing, so this isn't a workmanship grade.

Speed

How long their permits take from issue to the completion date the County records, compared with other Boulder County contractors in the trade. Shown for firms with 10+ permits.

About the ranking: The score combines how much of this exact work a contractor has on record, how often their older permits reached completion (where we can measure it), how well their usual job size matches your budget, how recently they've been active, and how much of their work is near you. A measure we can't calculate is left out rather than guessed, and a thin record pulls the score toward the middle. A contractor whose matched license has a problem is listed after everyone else. You set the weights with the sliders on every list.

Boulder County (unincorporated) specifics: These are County permits for unincorporated Boulder County only (Niwot, Gold Hill, Ward, the mountain areas and the county islands). The City of Boulder issues its own permits and has its own separate Boulder pages, and Longmont, Louisville, Lafayette, Superior, Erie, Lyons, Nederland and Jamestown issue theirs too. The County's public permit feed stopped taking new applications on May 4, 2026 (statuses still update), so the three-year window is May 2023 through April 2026, the last full month before the feed stopped, and the most recent 12 months are May 2025 through April 2026. Permits the County issued after that aren't in the feed yet. Building permits often name the architect rather than the builder, so New Home, pools and garages, ADUs and accessory buildings have too few named builders to rank, and many deconstruction and demolition permits are filed by the owner, so that trade isn't ranked either. Plumbing and water heaters are ranked together. Boulder County is a small market: most firms have only one or two permits here, so few reach the thresholds for speed or a price comparison, and additions show no price comparison. Boulder County licenses contractors who work in the unincorporated county and Colorado licenses electricians and plumbers, but neither publishes a bulk license file, so license status isn't shown. Locations are by ZIP code. Some firms appear under two spellings.

Common questions

  • Where does the information come from?Work history comes from Boulder County Community Planning & Permitting building permits on homes in unincorporated Boulder County (the County's Accela permit layer, which stopped taking new applications on May 4, 2026, so the data ends with April 2026; the City of Boulder and the other cities issue their own permits), with issue dates and declared job values from the Boulder County Assessor's permit file. Home values come from Boulder County Assessor 2026 actual values. The current data covers May 2023 through April 2026, so it won't reflect a filing made after that.
  • If I don't see a permit, does that mean the contractor did something wrong? No. Some jobs don't need a permit, some are filed under a different business name, and work outside Boulder County isn't in this view. A blank record is a reason to ask questions, not an accusation.
  • How do I check if a contractor is licensed in Boulder County (unincorporated)?Ask the contractor for the license number and look it up at Boulder County licensed contractors. How to check a contractor's license in Colorado →
  • Does a high score mean I should hire them?It means their public record looks like a match for the settings you chose. Before hiring, get references, confirm insurance and licensing, and agree on scope and price in writing.
