Which addresses this covers
The City of Charlotte's Search Projects and Permits page says "Building Permit information can be viewed by address, project, or permit number" and links to the county. The City's own Accela site covers land development work (commercial plans, residential subdivisions, plats, as-builts and bonds), not building permits. The county issues building permits for Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Matthews, Mint Hill, Davidson, Pineville and unincorporated land.
| Tool | Search by | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| WebPermit | Address or permit number | Permits and inspections; the Certificate of Occupancy link shows the defect rate report |
| AccelaMeck | Site address, contractor license information, parcel number, record number, trade name, contact | Building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits, plan review and inspections |
| Online Document Research | Document search | Certificates of occupancy, certificates of compliance and permit applications for the last six years |
| BuildingPermits layer (open data) | Any field | Building permits only, with status, issue and completion dates and declared cost; our source |
How to look up the permits on a Mecklenburg County address
- Open WebPermit and choose View Permits, or open AccelaMeck and use Search Applications under Residential.
- Enter the street address, the permit number on your paperwork, or (in AccelaMeck) the parcel number.
- Open each permit. A remodel usually has a building permit plus separate electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits, and the trade permits are only in these systems, not in the open file.
- Check the status and the inspection list. A permit with no passed final inspection is still open.
- To see who pulled a permit, use AccelaMeck's search by licensed professional and compare the license number with the one on your contract.
What the statuses mean
The county's open BuildingPermits layer has two statuses:
| Status in the county file | What it means | How we count it |
|---|---|---|
| Complete | The county recorded the work as complete; the completion date is the final | Finished |
| Issued | Permit active, work under way or not yet finaled | Open |
Of the permits issued May 2023 to April 2024, 98.9% had finished and 1.1% were still open in the county's file (read 20 October 2026). With so few left open, an Issued status on a permit more than a year old is worth asking the contractor about.
When the record is not online
Code Enforcement's Public Records page has a Public Records Request Form for drawings and a separate form for other records, and links the county's general public records requests page. It says the office keeps commercial plans for high-rise, government and institutional buildings for the life of the building and other commercial projects for two years, and its Online Document Research tool covers building records for "the last six years". Contact: 980-314-CODE (2633), LUESA, 2145 Suttle Ave., Charlotte, NC 28208, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (read 24 October 2026).
What our Mecklenburg County pages add
The portals answer "what was permitted at this address". Our Mecklenburg County page answers "what gets built here, and how fast the county signs it off", from the county's building permits issued May 2023 to April 2025:
| Kind of work | Permits (May 2023–Apr 2025) | Finished (issued May 2023–Apr 2024) | Usual days to final (issued May 2023–Apr 2024) |
|---|---|---|---|
| New homes | 12,501 | 99.8% | 196 |
| Remodels and repairs | 5,754 | 99.5% | 106 |
| Garages, sheds and shade structures | 2,140 | 98.6% | 116 |
| Additions | 2,067 | 98.4% | 149 |
| Demolition | 1,529 | 100.0% | 52 |
| Pools and spas | 1,130 | 98.3% | 219 |
| Solar | 730 | 99.5% | 61 |
| Roofing | 653 | 99.5% | 75 |
74% of the 35,817 permits issued May 2023 to April 2025 were on homes. The permit statistics page breaks them down by year, month and season, how long a permit takes has the middle-half ranges (the usual permit took 169 days, issued May 2023 to April 2024), permits by ZIP code shows where the work is (28078 led with 2,403 permits, May 2023 to April 2025), and browse permits lists the rows without owner names or street addresses. To check the license behind a name on a permit, use How to check a contractor's license in North Carolina.
What this does not tell you
The county's public layer stops adding permits after April 2025, so newer permits are only in WebPermit and AccelaMeck. It holds building permits only: electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits are not in it, and it names no contractor, so our pages show counts, not firm rankings. A finished permit means the county recorded the work complete, not what it cost or whether you were happy with it.
How we know this
Portal search fields were read on WebPermit, AccelaMeck and the City of Charlotte's Search Projects and Permits page, and the records process on Code Enforcement's Public Records page, on 24 October 2026. Our counts are Mecklenburg County GIS's BuildingPermits layer, read 20 October 2026: building permits issued May 2023 to April 2025, countywide.
Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through April 30, 2025. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Charlotte or Mecklenburg County?
Search the address in Mecklenburg County's WebPermit system (webpermit.mecklenburgcountync.gov), which says it lets you view permits and inspections by address or permit number. The county issues building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits for Charlotte and the towns, so the City of Charlotte's own portal is not the place to look.
- Does the City of Charlotte issue building permits?
No. Charlotte's Search Projects and Permits page sends building permit searches to Mecklenburg County. The City's Accela site covers land development plans, subdivisions, plats and bonds, not building permits.
- Can I search Mecklenburg County permits by contractor?
Yes, in AccelaMeck. Its building search takes a site address, contractor license information, a parcel number or a record number. The county's open permit file names no contractor, so our pages show counts, not firm lists.
- How do I get an old Mecklenburg County permit file or plans?
Code Enforcement's Public Records page has two request forms, one for drawings and one for other records, and an Online Document Research tool for building records from the last six years. The office phone is 980-314-CODE (2633).
- How long does a building permit take to reach final in Mecklenburg County?
For permits issued May 2023 to April 2024 that reached a final, the usual permit took 169 days from issue to the county's completion date (middle half 97 to 269 days). A re-roof usually took 75 days, a new home 196.
