Portland building permit search: PortlandMaps, statuses and old records

To look up a permit in Portland, Oregon, search the address on PortlandMaps, then open Permits & Zoning and Permits. Portland Permitting & Development says this shows "active and historical building, trade, land use, and enforcement cases from 2000 to the present", and that selecting an application number shows its details, with each review and inspection step under Activity (PortlandMaps general search, read 24 October 2026). In our file the City issued 76,879 building and trade permits from October 2024 to September 2026.

This covers the City of Portland. Gresham, Beaverton, Lake Oswego and the rest of the metro area run their own permit offices.

How to look up the permits on a Portland address

  1. Go to portlandmaps.com and type the address in the search bar. If it fails, the City suggests the house number and street without "St" or "Ave".
  2. On the property summary, select Permits & Zoning, then Permits. Use Pop Out to widen the list.
  3. Open each application number. Electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits are filed apart from the building permit, so one remodel usually shows several.
  4. Read the status and open Activity for the inspection history.
  5. For plans from 2012 onward, open the Documents bar. The City says viewing them needs a free City of Portland account.

What the statuses mean

These are the main statuses in the City's permit file and how our pages count them:

Status in the City file What it means How we count it
Final, Closed, Completed Final inspection passed or the permit closed out Finished
Issued, Under Inspection Permit live; work under way Open
Expired, Expired - UF Lapsed before a final Expired
Cancelled, Denied, Withdrawn, Void Never went ahead Left out

A permit that expired or was cancelled is not counted as finished even when the file gives it a closing date. Of the permits issued October 2024 to September 2025, 93.3% had finished, 5.2% were still open and 1.5% had expired by our 18 October 2026 snapshot.

When the record is not online

Portland Permitting & Development's public records page says plans and applications for permits "issued from June 1, 2012, through December 2023 are available for free on Portland Maps", and that most permits issued after December 2023 are not yet online in that form. For those, and for anything issued before 1 June 2012, file a request through the City's public records portal. The page says: "We require a minimum records request fee of $8 per address", charged when you submit, with extra fees estimated for complex histories, and that "it could take two weeks or more to fulfill requests for building permit records" (read 24 October 2026).

What our Portland pages add

PortlandMaps answers "what was permitted at this address". Our Portland page answers "what gets built here, and how fast the City signs it off":

Kind of work Permits (Oct 2024–Sep 2026) Finished (issued Oct 2024–Sep 2025) Usual days to final (issued Oct 2024–Sep 2025)
Electrical 23,696 98.2% 36
HVAC 16,519 97.7% 29
Plumbing 15,031 97.7% 26
Remodels and repairs 3,972 89.3% 110
Solar 3,093 96.9% 48
New homes 2,203 93.2% 252
Additions 792 78.6% 195
ADUs 245 92.9% 213

67% of the 76,879 permits issued October 2024 to September 2026 were on homes. Roofing counts are low (150 permits) because a re-roof with no structural work needs no permit in Portland. The permit statistics page has the year, month and season breakdown, how long a permit takes has the middle-half ranges, permits by ZIP code shows where the work is (97219 led with 5,377 permits in the same window), and browse permits lists the rows without owner names or street addresses. To check a contractor's license, use How to check a contractor's license in Oregon.

What this does not tell you

The City's file names no contractor, so our pages show counts, not firm rankings. Job value is declared on building permits only, not on electrical, mechanical or plumbing permits. A Final status means the City passed the work, not what it cost.

How we know this

The search steps are quoted from Portland Permitting & Development's PortlandMaps general search guide and the records process from its public records page, both read 24 October 2026. Our counts are the City's PortlandMaps All Permits layer, read 18 October 2026: building and trade permits issued October 2024 to September 2026 for property inside the City of Portland.

Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 18, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.

Questions

  • How do I find out if a permit was pulled on my house in Portland?

Search your address on PortlandMaps (portlandmaps.com), open Permits & Zoning, then Permits. The City says this lists active and historical building, trade, land use and enforcement cases from 2000 to the present.

  • Can I search Portland permits by permit number?

Yes. Portland Permitting & Development points to the PortlandMaps advanced search for a search by IVR or permit number, and its advanced features let you search by permit type, status, location or time.

  • How do I get old Portland permit records or plans?

Plans and applications for permits issued June 2012 to December 2023 are free on PortlandMaps. Earlier records need a request through the City's public records portal at portland.gov/prr, with a minimum fee of $8 per address.

  • Can I look up a Portland contractor's permits?

Not from the City's public file: it names no contractor, so we do not rank firms for Portland. Check the firm's license with the Oregon Construction Contractors Board.

  • How long does a Portland permit take to reach final?

For permits issued October 2024 to September 2025 that reached a final, the usual one took 44 days. A plumbing permit usually took 26 days, an electrical permit 36 and a new home 252.
