Which license each job needs in Wichita
| Work | License or registration | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Roofing and siding | MABCD contractor license and a Kansas Roofer Registration Number, both on Form 62 | MABCD LookUp; AG Roofing Registration Directory |
| Electrical | MABCD electrical contractor license, number on Form 2 | MABCD LookUp |
| Plumbing | MABCD plumbing contractor license, number on Form 3 | MABCD LookUp |
| Heating and air conditioning | MABCD mechanical contractor license, number on the permit form | MABCD LookUp |
| Remodels, additions, new homes | MABCD contractor license | MABCD LookUp, or 316-660-1840 |
MABCD's roofing and siding permit form asks for the contractor's "KS Roofer Registration Number" and contractor license number. The Attorney General's directory sorts roofers into statuses (read 26 October 2026):
| Kansas roofer status | May the roofer work? |
|---|---|
| In Good Standing | Yes: registered |
| Exempt | Yes, in limited circumstances: a general contractor that filed an exemption affidavit |
| Not In Good Standing | No: usually a lapse in registration, insurance, workers' compensation or taxes |
| Revoked, Enjoined, Inactive | No |
How to run the lookup in five minutes
- Ask for the MABCD license number and, for a roofer, the Kansas roofer registration number.
- Search MABCD: open the Online LookUp, choose Lookup Contractor License and enter the number or name.
- Roofer: search the Roofing Registration Directory by business name or registration number and look for In Good Standing.
- Insurance: MABCD's Do I Need a Permit? page says to call 316-660-1840 to see "if that contractor is licensed and insured".
- Look up the house: the same LookUp's Lookup Plan Review or Permit searches by permit number, applicant or address; the Wichita building permit search guide has the details.
Doing the work yourself
From MABCD's Do I Need a Permit? page: "You must own and occupy the home." When you apply you either name a licensed subcontractor for each required trade or "Schedule the homeowner's exam for each trade you wish to perform"; fail the exam and a licensed subcontractor does that trade's work. "If you own the home but do not live in the home, you MUST use a licensed contractor to do the work." And if a contractor asks you to get the permit, MABCD says to say no: "This is a red flag."
What our Wichita pages add
MABCD's LookUp answers "is this firm licensed". Our Wichita page shows what MABCD permits on City of Wichita property, October 2024 to September 2026:
| Kind of work | Permits (Oct 2024–Sep 2026) | Oct 2024–Sep 2025 | Oct 2025–Sep 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roofing and siding | 18,740 | 4,134 | 14,606 |
| Plumbing | 11,195 | 5,158 | 6,037 |
| Electrical | 8,393 | 4,115 | 4,278 |
| HVAC | 5,956 | 2,938 | 3,018 |
| Remodels and repairs | 2,775 | 1,173 | 1,602 |
| New homes | 2,446 | 1,098 | 1,348 |
| Additions | 869 | 367 | 502 |
Roofing permits more than tripled from the first year to the second. The Kansas Attorney General has warned that storm damage can attract unregistered contractors, so the two-number check above matters most in a year like this. 80% of the 54,579 permits were on homes, and 98% of those issued October 2024 to September 2025 were finished. The permit statistics page has the months, and permits by ZIP code the areas. Local permit rules: roofing, electrical, plumbing and HVAC permits. Statewide rules: How to check a contractor's license in Kansas.
What this lookup does not tell you
The permit file we use names no contractor, so we cannot show who did a job or match firms to licenses. MABCD's permits for unincorporated Sedgwick County and the small cities around Wichita are in the same system but not in our counts. A license says the firm may do the work, not how its last job went.
How we know this
License and homeowner rules are quoted from MABCD's Online LookUp, Do I Need a Permit? page and Forms 2, 3 and 62, and roofer statuses from the Kansas Attorney General's Roofing Registration Directory, read 26 October 2026. Counts are the City of Wichita's MABCD permit layer, read 19 October 2026: permits on City of Wichita property applied for October 2024 to September 2026.
Numbers come from public permit records in 57 cities, data through October 19, 2026. Nobody paid to be on this page and nobody can.
Questions
- Who licenses contractors in Wichita?
The Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD), which issues permits and contractor licenses for the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County. Kansas has no general state contractor license; the statewide check is the Attorney General's roofing contractor registration.
- How do I look up a Wichita contractor's license?
Use Lookup Contractor License in the MABCD Online LookUp (mabcdportal.sedgwickcounty.org), by license number or name. MABCD also says to call 316-660-1840 to check whether a contractor is licensed and insured.
- What does a Wichita roofer need?
Two numbers. MABCD's roofing and siding permit form (Form 62) asks for the contractor's Kansas Roofer Registration Number and the MABCD contractor license number. Check the registration in the Attorney General's Roofing Registration Directory; only In Good Standing and Exempt contractors may lawfully do roofing.
- Can a Wichita homeowner do their own work?
Yes, if you own and occupy the home. You either name a licensed subcontractor for each trade or schedule MABCD's homeowner exam for each trade you want to do; fail it and a licensed subcontractor does that work. If you own the home but do not live in it, MABCD says you must use a licensed contractor.
- My contractor asked me to pull the permit. Is that normal?
No. MABCD says if a contractor asks you to get the permit, say no: "This is a red flag." The permit holder is responsible for the work and its inspections.
